When the .NET universal top-level domain extension was first established in 1985, together with the first domain name extensions on the World Wide Web, it was intended to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure firms. Given that there were no specific requirements about the usage of the top-level domain extension, though, .NET domains were purchased and used for diverse purposes and by a huge number of people. This domain extension represents a great substitute of .COM, notably if the desired domain with the latter extension is not available for registration.

You can easily change the WHOIS information of the domain through your Control Panel interface, or, if you wouldn't like this information to be accessible at all, you can add a Whois Privacy Protection service, so nobody will be able to obtain your true contact details.
