Most of the emails sent around the globe these days are spam, i.e. unwanted messages with different offers or with links to malicious software. Not only are such email messages annoying, but they also present a threat to your own computer, not to mention that you may get conned. This is the reason why a lot of email providers make use of email filters, which are applications that ‘scan’ all inbound email messages and filter the undesirable ones based on their content – what words or phrases an email contains and how many times they are mentioned, what website a particular hyperlink points to, what outbound mail server the email comes from, and so on. Some hosting providers also rely on the databases of spam-tracking organizations devoted to providing the most up-to-the-minute information about unrequested messages, to ensure that their customers won’t get any email in their mailbox that’s not supposed to be there.
